IDS Imaging U3-31A0SE Rev.1.2 Global Shutter USB3 Industrial Camera for Ultra-High-Speed Imaging

Product Description

The IDS U3-31A0SE Rev.1.2 is an ultra-high-speed USB3 industrial camera developed for applications where precise timing and motion accuracy are critical. Built on a global shutter CMOS sensor with 0.5 MP resolution, it captures fast-moving objects without distortion, making it ideal for motion analysis and high-speed inspection. The camera is available in mono and color versions and features a compact aluminum housing with a C-mount interface, allowing straightforward integration into space-constrained industrial and laboratory systems.

With a large 1/1.7″ optical format and 9 µm pixel size, the U3-31A0SE delivers strong light sensitivity that supports very short exposure times while maintaining stable image quality. Frame rates close to 740 fps enable precise capture of rapid processes, while hardware triggering, flash control, and extensive on-camera processing help reduce system latency. These characteristics make the camera well suited for high-speed AOI, motion tracking, and time-critical measurement tasks.

Ideal Applications

1. Ultra-Fast Conveyor Belt Inspection

In high-output production lines, items often move too quickly for standard cameras to capture defects clearly. A global shutter camera operating at very high frame rates allows each product to be imaged sharply as it passes through the inspection zone. Extremely short exposure times prevent blur, while precise hardware triggering aligns image capture with conveyor movement. The moderate resolution is sufficient for identifying shape deviations, missing elements, or surface damage without creating unnecessary data load. This approach is widely used in packaging, electronics assembly, and automated sorting systems where speed, timing accuracy, and reliability are more critical than ultra-high resolution.

2. Analysis of High-Speed Rotating Machinery

Rotating components such as shafts, gears, or cooling fans are difficult to inspect due to vibration and rapid motion. A global shutter sensor captures these objects without distortion, even at high rotational speeds. Very high frame rates allow engineers to observe motion behavior frame by frame, making it easier to detect imbalance, wobble, or mechanical irregularities. Short exposures preserve edge sharpness, while synchronized lighting improves contrast. This imaging method is commonly applied in condition monitoring, failure analysis, and mechanical development, where understanding dynamic behavior helps improve performance and prevent unexpected downtime.

3. Impact and Material Stress Testing

Testing scenarios involving impacts or sudden deformation require cameras that can record events lasting only fractions of a second. High-speed imaging with a global shutter makes it possible to visualize how materials react under extreme stress. Each frame represents a precise moment in time, avoiding distortion during rapid movement. Large pixel size supports short, intense lighting pulses, ensuring usable image quality. Such systems are frequently used in material research, safety validation, and academic studies to examine crack formation, structural failure, or energy transfer during high-speed events.

4. Precision Monitoring in Micro-Assembly Processes

Micro-assembly and semiconductor production rely on extremely fast and accurate positioning systems. A high-speed global shutter camera can monitor pick-and-place tools and component alignment without motion artifacts. High frame rates provide continuous visual feedback, while region-of-interest selection reduces data volume for faster processing. This enables early detection of placement errors or timing issues that could affect yield. The technology is especially valuable in precision manufacturing environments where even small deviations can lead to defects or reduced production efficiency.

5. Motion Capture for Sports Science and Biomechanics

Studying fast human movement or equipment dynamics requires distortion-free imaging with high temporal resolution. Global shutter technology ensures that rapid limb motion or object rotation is recorded accurately across the entire frame. High frame rates allow detailed analysis of acceleration, contact points, and movement patterns. Large pixels support indoor testing setups with controlled lighting. These capabilities are widely used in sports research and biomechanics to evaluate technique, improve equipment design, and analyze injury mechanisms, where precise motion timing is more important than high pixel count.
